Gujarati Urad Dal

Gujarati Urad Dal

Gujarati Urad Dal is very easy and quick to make. This dal is very healthy, full of nutritious and rich in protein. It is perfect combination with Gujarati Bhakri and rice. It is made from split black gram, with Ginger, garlic tempering. It is delicious in taste and good in winter season because of Ginger-Garlic.

Gujarati Urad Dal

 

Ingredients:

• 1 cup Urad Dal (Split Black Gram)
• ½ cup Chopped Tomatoes
• 1-2 tbsp Ginger-Garlic Paste
• 2-3 Green Chilies Finely Crushed
• 5-6 Curry Leaves
• 1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
• 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
• Pinch of Asafoetida /Hing
• 3-4 Dry Mango Slice/Kokam/1 Tamarind
• ¼ cup Chopped Coriander Leaves
• 2 tbsp Oil
• 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
• Salt

Method:

1. Wash and drain the dal 2-3 times.
2. Pressure cooks Urad Dal with 4 cups water, for 15-20 minutes or until it gets soft.
3. Add turmeric, salt and whisk the dal with using hand blender or wire whisk.
4. Now, for tempering, take a deep frying pan, heat oil in it over medium heat.
5. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, asafoetida and curry leaves, stir it for few seconds.
6. Add ginger, garlic and green chilies, Cook for about a mins. Stirring frequently.
7. Add chopped tomatoes and coriander leaves into the pan and cook further on medium flame for 1-2mins.
8. Add cooked dal, dry mango slices and salt in it and turn the heat to high, stir it well.
9. When it starts boiling, turn the heat to low and cook further for 4-5mins.
10. Garnish Urad Dal with chopped coriander leaves and serve with whole wheat Bhakri, rice or paratha.
