Kanda Poha / Pohay (Onion Poha)

Kanda Poha Photography

Kanda Poha or Pohay or Onion Poha

Kanda Poha is very tasty and quick filling breakfast. Kanda Poha is a dish from Maharashtrian cuisine. Kanda Poha is a snack made from flattened rice. It is most likely served with tea and is probably the most likely dish that a Maharashtrian will offer to his guest. During arranged marriages in Maharashtra, Kanda Poha (literal translation, poha prepared with onion) is most likely the dish served when the two families meet. It’s so common that sometimes arranged marriage itself is referred colloquially as “Kanda-Pohay”.

Ingredients:

• 2 cup Thick Poha/Thick White Beaten/Flattened Rice
• ½ cup Chopped Onion
• ¼ cup Peanuts
• ¼ cup Sliced Dry Coconuts
• 2-3 chopped Green Chili
• 4-5 Curry Leaves
• ½ tsp Mustard Seeds
• ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
• Pinch of Hing/Asafetida
• 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
• Salt as per taste
• ½ Lemon Juice
• Chopped Coriander Leaves
• 2 tbsp Oil
• 1 tsp Sugar (Optional)

Method:

1. Wash and drain the poha, sprinkle 1-2 tbsp water over it and keep aside for 5-10 minutes.

2. Add salt, lemon juice, sugar, turmeric powder and mix well, again keep aside.

3. Heat the oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, when seed crackled, add pinch of hing, curry leaves, green chili and saute for few second.

4. Now add onion, peanuts, sliced coconuts and stir fry them till golden brown on medium flame.

5. Add chopped coriander leaves and again stir it again on low flame.

6. Add poha and mix well, cover it for 2 minutes on low flame.
Kanda Poha

7. Switch off the flame, don’t open for 1-2 minutes, as inside steam helps to make poha softer.

8. Kanda Poha is ready to serve hot with garma-garam chai (tea).
