Mango Mastani, just like our recipe Mango Sago Pudding is not just a drink, it is an experience in a glass. Originating from Pune, this iconic summer beverage is a rich and indulgent combination of thick mango milkshake topped with chopped fruits, crunchy almonds, and a generous scoop of ice cream and whipped cream. Loved for its creamy texture and vibrant mango flavor, Mango Mastani has become one of Maharashtra’s most celebrated seasonal treats.
The story behind Mango Mastani is just as fascinating as its taste. This beloved drink is said to be inspired by Mastani, the beautiful and charismatic companion of Bajirao Peshwa. According to the owners of one of Pune’s oldest Mastani shops, Gujjar Cold Drink, customers would often react to the delicious drink by saying “Mast,” meaning wonderful or fantastic, which eventually inspired the name Mastani. The name perfectly captures the richness, beauty, and charm of this classic creation. While Gujarati Style Aamras or Keri No Ras is a traditional favorite enjoyed during the mango season, Mango Mastani takes the love for mangoes to another level with the addition of milk, ice cream, and dry fruits, creating a rich and indulgent dessert drink.
For Punekars, Mango Mastani is more than a dessert drink. It represents nostalgia, cultural pride, and summer celebrations. Traditionally enjoyed during mango season, this refreshing yet filling drink combines the sweetness of ripe mangoes with creamy milk and decadent toppings, creating a dessert worthy of special occasions and family gatherings.
When mangoes are in season, making Mango Mastani at home is a must. It is quick, simple, and incredibly satisfying, making it perfect for hot summer days. Whether you serve it as an evening treat, party dessert, or festive drink, this delicious Mango Mastani recipe brings the authentic flavors of Pune straight to your kitchen.
